In Phoenix - Friday, May 16th - The Urban Land Institute, in conjunction with the Governor’s Growth Cabinet, Maricopa Association of Governments and a variety of other agencies, is hosting a “Reality Check” to deal with the anticipated long-range population growth facing the Central Arizona region. The event will take place at the Phoenix Convention Center, and involve 300 selected participants representing a balance of public, private and civic sector representatives. Partners in Participation, LLC has a small contract to organize, orient and coordinate 30 volunteer facilitators to work with 10-person tables during the morning of the event. With the aid of a booklet of information sent to each participant ahead of time and a very large map of the region each table group will create its own scenario for dealing with an influx of six million people to the region. This will be done by having each table group agree on a set of values to guide their decisions and then place 1400 Legos representing housing and jobs on their table maps in the most strategic and responsible way they can envision. The scenarios will be reflected on, compared and tallied during lunch time and into the afternoon, while future implications will be discussed with the input of prominent speakers (Governor Napolitano and ASU President Michael Crow have been invited) and a panel of representatives from selected table groups with diverse scenarios. You can find out more about the Reality Check process and history, including a short video of a similar event in Tampa Bay through the Urban Land Institute’s website at www.azOneFuture.com.
